What Is An Oxygen Sensor?
An oxygen sensor is a device that monitors the oxygen levels in a vehicle’s exhaust system. It helps ensure that the engine is running at optimal efficiency by maintaining the correct air-fuel mixture. The oxygen sensor consists of two elements: a zirconia ceramic cell and a platinum catalyst. These materials create an electrical current that increases as the level of oxygen in the exhaust decreases.
O2 Sensor Symptoms
If your vehicle’s oxygen sensor is going bad, you may notice any of the following symptoms:
– decreased fuel economy
– increased emissions
– engine misfires
– Hesitation or stalling
– Check engine light is on
Fixing A Bad Oxygen Sensor
If you think you have a bad oxygen sensor, the best thing to do is take it to a mechanic for diagnosis. They will be able to tell for sure if the sensor is bad and replace it if necessary. Replacing a bad oxygen sensor is fairly inexpensive and will save you money in the long run by improving your fuel economy and preventing further damage to your engine.
